What the Valley of Fire tour from Las Vegas covers

Valley of Fire State Park sits 55 miles north-east of Las Vegas, off Interstate 15 at exit 75, about an hour of driving each way. This tour runs 6 hours door to door and leaves about 240 minutes inside the park, capped at 13 guests, in a vehicle matched to the group size. Admission to Valley of Fire State Park is one of the inclusions, together with a professional driver and guide, bottled water, snacks and a deli-style sandwich for lunch.

The stop list works along the paved roads: Beehive Rock near the West Entrance, the petroglyph panels at Atlatl Rock, the Seven Sisters pillars for lunch, Rainbow Vista, the Silica Dome overlook, Elephant Rock at the eastern end and the Visitor Center. Valley of Fire Road covers 7.0 miles between the two fee booths at 35 mph, and White Domes Road branches north for 5.5 miles at 25 mph, about 20 minutes from the Visitor Center to the end of the pavement, so most of the four hours goes on stops rather than driving.

Trail access changes with the calendar. From 15 May to 30 September the park authority closes every trail longer than one mile as a heat-safety rule, which takes in Fire Wave, the Seven Wonders loop with Pink Canyon, White Domes Loop, Pinnacles Loop, Prospect, Arrowhead, Natural Arch and Charlie's Spring; in those months the guide adjusts the itinerary on the day according to weather and the group. Spring and autumn are the seasons the park authority names as the best ones, and a Valley of Fire tour from Las Vegas in those months reaches the full set of stops.

Two practical points shape the day. Parking is designated only, with no roadside parking anywhere, and with nearly one million visitors a year the lots at the popular trailheads fill early, so an 8 am departure is the right side of the crowd. Since 3 August 2026 the West Entrance has been closed Monday to Thursday while a new entrance lane and a second fee booth are built, a situation expected to run through the end of 2026, so Monday-to-Thursday departures reach the park by the East Entrance via State Route 169 or State Route 167.

The park is shut completely for annual maintenance from 1 December to 14 December. In 2026 that runs Tuesday 1 December to Monday 14 December, with no entry on foot or by vehicle and no commercial activity, guided tours included; normal operations resume on Tuesday 15 December 2026. Day use otherwise follows sunrise to sunset, and the Visitor Center and gift shop open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with different hours possible on holidays.

How the day runs

  1. Las Vegas pickup
Pickup times run from 7:50 am to 8:40 am at eleven points between Excalibur and the Plaza. The drive north-east follows Interstate 15 to exit 75, 55 miles and roughly an hour from the Strip.
  2. Valley of Fire State Park 240 min
About four hours inside a park of more than 40,000 acres of Jurassic Aztec sandstone, opened as Nevada's first state park in 1934 and designated by the legislature in 1935. Scenic stops can be adjusted for weather, park regulations and vehicle size, and from 15 May to 30 September the trail closures decide what is walkable.
  3. Beehive Rock
A short path over rocky dunes to the beehive-shaped sandstone near the West Entrance. The grooves run in different directions, a clear case of cross-bedding, with the Muddy Mountains behind.
  4. Atlatl Rock
Petroglyphs cut into red sandstone, put at 2,000 to 4,000 years old on the operator's listing, seen from the viewing platform. Climbing on petroglyph surfaces is prohibited, and this is one of the few spots in the park with any cell service.
  5. Seven Sisters lunch stop
The deli-style sandwich, snacks and water are handed out at Seven Sisters, a line of sandstone pillars standing right beside Valley of Fire Road. There is shade at the base of the rock, and the stop is short.
  6. Rainbow Vista
A stop on White Domes Road, also signed Mouse's Tank Road, where the banded rock shifts colour through the morning. An easy loop trail leads to a Fire Canyon overlook and back across open desert.
  7. Silica Dome Overlook
Red and white sandstone seen from the overlook parking area, with Silica Dome in front of you. The park brochure identifies this overlook as the Star Trek Generations location, a film the Nevada Film Office dates to 18 November 1994. The stop can be dropped in high summer temperatures.
  8. Elephant Rock
The formation close to the East Entrance, reached on a short walk from the parking area to the angle where the trunk and head line up. Climbing on Elephant Rock is prohibited.
  9. Fire Wave
Striped red, white and pink sandstone, 1.5 miles out and back from lot P3, five miles north of the Visitor Center on White Domes Road. Park staff put the round trip at about an hour and note that the loose sand and rough ground make it feel like three miles. The trail is closed from 15 May to 30 September, so this stop only happens in the cooler half of the year.
  10. Visitor Center
The building had its grand opening on 22 November 2025 and runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Exhibits cover geology, ecology, prehistory and history, there is a 10-minute orientation film narrated by William Shatner, a 200-seat outdoor amphitheatre and a gift shop. Dogs wait outside; only service animals come in.
