What a Valley of Fire day trip covers
The park lies 55 miles north-east of Las Vegas, off Interstate 15 at exit 75, and the drive takes about an hour each way. That road time is why these tours run five to eight hours, with three to four of them inside the park. Nevada State Parks warns against arriving by Uber or Lyft, because return rides are usually unavailable and visitors end up stranded, so an organised vehicle is the practical way to reach the sandstone.
Inside the gates the driving is short. Valley of Fire Road covers 7.0 miles between the West and East fee booths at 35 mph, and White Domes Road branches north for 5.5 miles at 25 mph, roughly 20 minutes from the Visitor Center to White Domes. Parking is the real constraint: designated lots only, no roadside parking anywhere, and the park now receives nearly one million visitors a year, so the lots at the popular trailheads fill early. Go early in the day if you have the choice of departure time.
Stop lists overlap more than the titles suggest. The Beehives, Atlatl Rock, Rainbow Vista and Elephant Rock appear on most of these itineraries, and several of the tours below list park admission or entrance fees among their inclusions; entry is handled per vehicle at a fee booth rather than as a dated ticket you reserve in advance. Fire Wave is the exception to the roadside pattern: it cannot be seen from the road and takes a 1.5-mile walk out and back from lot P3, five miles north of the Visitor Center, which park staff put at about an hour over loose sand.
Access changed this year. Since 3 August 2026 the West Entrance, the one reached from Interstate 15, has been closed Monday to Thursday while a new entrance lane and a second fee booth are built, and that is expected to continue through the end of 2026. It stays open Friday to Sunday in normal hours, and Monday-to-Thursday arrivals come in through the East Entrance via State Route 169 or State Route 167. Day use runs sunrise to sunset, and day visitors have to be out by sunset.
Which one fits you
First time in the park, no walking ambitions: take the small-group half day, 6 hours, from $99, 5.0 ★ (4125 reviews). It caps the group at 13, includes Valley of Fire State Park admission, picks up at multiple locations and feeds you a deli-style sandwich at Seven Sisters, with the Beehives, Atlatl Rock, Rainbow Vista, Elephant Rock and the Visitor Center on the list.
Hikers should pay the difference and take the guided hike, 5 hours, from $129, 5.0 ★ (1696 reviews). You choose easy, moderate or difficult at booking, the group is limited to 13, and the route passes the Moapa River Indian Reservation with a view of Lake Mead on the way. Book it for spring or autumn: from 15 May to 30 September every trail longer than one mile is closed under the park authority's heat rule, which takes Fire Wave, White Domes Loop and Pinnacles Loop off the table.
One day in Las Vegas and two landscapes to fit in: the Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon day tour, 8 hours, from $148, 4.9 ★ (871 reviews), gives four hours in the park plus a stop at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, with entrance fees, snacks and bottled water covered.
Photographers want the afternoon departure, 5 hours, from $128, 5.0 ★ (287 reviews). It spends three hours in the park and ends at Rainbow Vista for sunset, with pick-ups at 1:00 to 1:30 pm in winter and 3:30 to 4:00 pm in summer. There are no Wednesday or Friday departures, and drones are banned park-wide, so plan on ground-level shots.
On a tight budget with no need for lunch: the state park day tour, 6 hours, from $109, 4.8 ★ (341 reviews), covers hotel pick-up, drop-off and all entrance fees, and leaves food and water to you.
Anyone who values comfort and a longer stop list should look at the luxury day tour, 5.5 hours, from $196, 4.8 ★ (204 reviews). It adds the Moapa Paiute Travel Plaza rest stop, White Domes Trail, the Civilian Conservation Corps stone cabins and a sandwich of choice with chips, including a gluten-free option.
Before you book
- Pick-up differs by tour: the small-group half day collects at multiple locations around the Strip, while the guided hike, the state park day tour and the luxury day tour use hotel pick-up and drop-off.
- The afternoon departure runs around 1:00 to 1:30 pm in winter and 3:30 to 4:00 pm in summer, and does not operate on Wednesdays or Fridays.
- Gratuities are excluded on all six; the small-group half-day listing suggests 15 to 20 per cent for the driver and guide.
- Bottled water comes with five of the six tours, the state park day tour being the exception. Water inside the park is limited, so carry more than you expect to drink and add electrolytes in warm months.
- Dress for sand and sun: closed shoes with grip, a hat and sunglasses. Hiking is not recommended above 85 F (29 C), summer highs commonly pass 100 F, and winter runs from freezing to about 75 F (24 C).
- From 15 May to 30 September the park authority closes every trail longer than one mile for heat safety, including White Domes Loop, Fire Wave and the Seven Wonders loop, Pinnacles Loop, Prospect Trail, Arrowhead Trail, Natural Arch Trail and Charlie's Spring. Mouse's Tank, at 0.75 mile, is not on that list.
- The park shuts completely for maintenance from Tuesday 1 December to Monday 14 December 2026, guided tours included, with normal operations resuming on Tuesday 15 December 2026.
- Drones and other remote-controlled aircraft are prohibited, climbing on arches and petroglyph surfaces such as Arch Rock and Elephant Rock is not allowed, and dogs need a leash no longer than six feet and cannot go inside the Visitor Center.
- The Visitor Center and gift shop open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with different hours possible on holidays. Cell service works only at the entrances, Fire Canyon Overlook, lot P3, the White Domes lot and the Atlatl Rock platform.
- Inclusions, departure times and conditions vary between these tours and between dates; each booking page carries the current details.
